This month, we’re celebrating 10 years of coding bootcamps and a big announcement from our own team here at Course Report! We’ll also let you know about new funding for the federal apprenticeship system and “climatetech” jobs, the status of skills-based hiring, and the career outcomes of two coding bootcamp graduates in the news. Plus, learn more about the 10 coding bootcamps we added to the Course Report listings this July!

🥳 A DECADE OF CODING BOOTCAMPS

  • 🎉 It’s official: Course Report is now a part of Career.io! Career.io is an expert job search companion and joining forces will enable us to expand our services and support students before, during, and after their career change. 
  • Career.io announced a strategic partnership today with INFOSEC Institute which is a cybersecurity bootcamp, to provide comprehensive career services to students enrolled in Infosec. If you’re a school and think your students could benefit from Career.io career services, then get in touch!
  • Turing School has refreshed their program and is now teaching Software Engineering, where students will have the option to choose a focus of front end or back end in the final module of the program. 
  • Codesmith is leveling up its program to meet the needs of current career changers and upskillers. Their new motto is “Become Irreplaceable” and the program will focus on software engineering and machine learning/AI.
  • Hack Reactor (powered by Galvanize) got a site refresh this past month. 
  • Veteran coding bootcamps, Code Fellows and Rithm School both announced they were closing this July. 
  • Eleven Fifty Academy has pivoted itself to becoming an AI corporate training provider called Blaizing Academy

$19.5M FUNDING FOR CLIMATETECH JOBS + TRAINING

  • The Department of Commerce’s Economic Development Administration (EDA) announced it awarded $19.5 million to the South Florida ClimateReady Tech Hub. This funding will be used to support “climatetech” research, startups, and jobs in South Florida. Job training will be led by Miami Tech Works, which includes bootcamps like Ironhack, BrainStation, and 4Geeks Academy.
  • Higher Ed Dive reported that 2U has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy with a voluntary pre-packaged deal. Phil Hill interviewed CEO Paul Lalljie about how this would affect 2U’s university bootcamps, and Lalljie says that they will be revamping the bootcamps, but that there is no immediate plan to sunset them.

$244M IN FEDERAL APPRENTICESHIP FUNDING 

  • The White House announced it is awarding $244M to modernize and expand the registered apprenticeship system. 
  • WorkShift reports that Multiverse will be shifting its focus to customized corporate training programs now. 
  • VOA News highlighted Nathan Wyand, a software engineer in Charlottesville, Virginia who chose not to attend college due to high costs and instead chose Flatiron School to gain practical experience.

THE LATEST ON SKILLS-BASED HIRING & TRAINING

  • The New York Times about how credentials seem to be the bottleneck in the current skills-based hiring process. 
  • HR Dive reports that Bath & Body Works announced that it will now be offering an employee tuition program, called Investing in You. This program will include a tuition-free online platform of learning opportunities, plus an annual $3K education reimbursement for work-related courses. 
  • AP News reports that Connecticut will begin offering Citizens AI Academy, a platform of free, online classes that cover AI fundamentals, and how to use and manage generative AI on the job. 
  • Refresh Miami interviewed Eugene Cruz, a math teacher who leveled up his career through the Data Science & Machine Learning Bootcamp of Miami Tech Talent Coalition member, 4Geeks Academy
  • UK coding bootcamp Northcoders announced five scholarships that are funded through its Women and Gender Minorities Diversity Fund. The scholarships are specifically for Northcoders’ flexible, part-time coding bootcamp. 

2 NEW SCHOOLS

  • Carnegie Mellon University’s School of Computer Science is now accepting applications for its CMU TechBridge Coding Bootcamp. It’s a 4-month program that’s being run in partnership with TalentSprint. 
  • IBM rolled out a free, online certificate program, called SkillsBuild, with courses in cybersecurity and data analytics.
