There was a real stir-up in the OPM world this October, and we’ll also be diving into workforce development initiatives that are gaining steam in the U.S. As we near Election Day, we’re taking a look at what presidential candidates Kamala Harris and Donald Trump envision for skills-based hiring. THE LATEST RULING ON OPMs

  • The Education Department is rescinding its February 2023 guidance that online program managers (OPMs) should be regulated as third-party servicers. 

  • Phil on EdTech revised his predictions on OPMs, saying they are no longer “on life support” and market demand for OPMs is higher in 2024 than 2023. 

1 ACQUISITION & $150M IN BOOTCAMP FUNDRAISES

  • Eruditus, the parent company of coding bootcamp provider Emeritus, has secured a new $150M funding round, which brings the company valuation to $3-$3.5 billion. 

  • According to The New Times, the Rwandan government plans to invest over Rwf 5 billion over the next three years to expand and support its Rwanda Coding Academy.

  • Guild Education announced this month that it has acquired Nomadic Learning, an enterprise training platform, in order to create its new Guild Academy. 

  • 2U has appointed former Chief Financial Officer Matthew Norden as its interim CEO.

  • Tina-Marie Gulley is now officially the CEO of Ada Developers Academy after serving as its interim CEO since this April. 

  • Simplilearn, which owns Fullstack Academy, is relocating its headquarters from San Francisco to Plano, Texas.

WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT DURING ELECTION SEASON

  • USA Today gave a good breakdown on where the presidential candidates stand on workforce development.

  • The Tech Council of Delaware came together this month to form the new Tech Talent & Workforce Committee, which aims to improve the tech talent pipeline within underrepresented communities through organizations like Year Up and Zip Code Wilmington

  • Tech Elevator in partnership with Tech Impact is offering 10 total tuition scholarships to Delaware residents for its upcoming online cohort. Applications are due by November 4th and the cohort will start on November 12th!

  • Technically reported on SkillsNation, a new $1.2M apprenticeship & training program to help upskill Washington, DC residents. 

  • Simplilearn has partnered with skills-building platform Degreed in order to offer more AI courses and resources to students in their workforce development programs. 

  • A new documentary, “UNTAPPED: Closing America's Opportunity Gap," on Netflix follows six young adults as they go through the tech training program at Year Up United in the hopes of landing an internship at a Fortune 500 company. 

  • The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau brought a lawsuit against Climb Credit.

  • Upright Education announced a new partnership with St. Cloud State University in Minnesota.
