Happy Fall! This September, we released the Best QA Bootcamps of 2024! The federal government made a new push for skills-based hiring and apprenticeships, and also unveiled a campaign to fill 500,000 open cybersecurity roles. We’re sharing the latest student outcomes on federally funded skills bootcamps in the UK, and two recent initiatives for women in tech. Plus, we’ll let you know about the 4 new coding bootcamps that we added to the Course Report directory this month.

1 TECH TRAINING PROGRAM ACQUISITION + 1 REBRAND

  • Utah’s Western Governors University announced that it has acquired the apprenticeship platform, Craft Education Inc for an undisclosed amount. 

  • Stride, Inc (which owns Galvanize, Hack Reactor, and Tech Elevator) was named Best EdTech Company by the Global EdTech Awards this month.

  • Workforce development organization Year Up announced that it has rebranded Year Up United (YUU). 

THE IMPACT OF OPMs & FEDERALLY FUNDED PROGRAMS

  • Higher Ed Dive reports that a federal bankruptcy judge approved the 2U’s Chapter 11 bankruptcy.  

  • The New York Times dove into criticism and a 2021 lawsuit against Simplilearn and Caltech. 

  • FE Week shared the 2021-22 student outcomes data of England’s federally funded skills bootcamps. 

EXPANDING APPRENTICESHIPS & SKILLS-BASED HIRING

  • Inside Higher Ed covered how presidential candidate Kamala Harris is campaigning to expand skills-based hiring and apprenticeships.  

  • The White House announced 500K U.S. cybersecurity jobs that need to be filled. They are looking to remove college degree requirements from certain roles, and expand work-based learning through registered apprenticeships.

  • In our recent Live Q&A with career experts from Springboard, General Assembly, Tech Elevator, and Flatiron School, we dove into what it takes to land a tech job after graduating from a coding bootcamp in 2024. 

  • Technically's How I Got Here series featured Turing School student William Lavery who is currently making a career change from farm management to tech.

THE IMPORTANCE OF COMMUNITY FOR WOMEN IN TECH

  • In the wake of Women Who Code’s closing, Technically reports that women technologists in Washington, D.C. are coming together to create a new group called Women and Gender eXpansive Coders

  • Al-Jazeera highlighted the nonprofit organization, Sapna Center, which offers free, year-long tech training to women in rural India to help them land jobs in IT. 

  • Code Platoon announced that they can now accept adult children of veterans and active-duty servicemembers. In 2023, Code Platoon reported that they served nearly 200 military coding students. 70% of these graduates landed tech jobs within six months, with a median starting salary of $85,000.

4 NEW CODING BOOTCAMPS

  • Springboard has partnered with University of Arizona Continuing & Professional Education to offer online bootcamps in data analytics, data science, machine learning, AI, UI/UX design and coding.

  • In partnership with Puerto Rico’s Department of Economic Development and Commerce, Ironhack announced that it’s expanding its AI bootcamp to train 1,000 locals and develop 50,000 tech professionals by 2030.

  • Simplilearn has partnered with the Indian Institute of Technology in Madras to offer a new Applied Generative AI bootcamp. 

  • Atlanta Metropolitan State College and the Center for Sustainable Communities have partnered to create a 16-week tech academy for 10 Southwest Atlanta citizens. Students will receive training through Codecademy, coaching through personal mentors, and they will receive a free laptop.
