Hackbright Academy is a software engineering school for gender equality founded in 2012 that offers online courses. The school offers a 12-week, immersive full-time software engineering program and a 26-week, part-time program, both of which cover the fundamentals of computer science and modern web development such as the command line, Python, JavaScript, HTML & CSS, Git, Flask, pair programming, SQL/ORMS, and deployment. The part-time program covers the same content as the immersive program, but is designed for students who want to maintain their jobs.

Prospective applicants will need to fill out an online application detailing their interests and background, then complete an interview with the admissions team and a technical assessment. Hackbright's ideal candidate has a desire to learn software development and has prior exposure to programming.

Hackbright Academy provides students with mentorship, tech talks, and career services. Hackbright Academy offers deferred tuition, limited scholarships, and payment plans for qualified students.

    Supportive Environment to learn coding

Learned full-stack through lectures and pair programming/lab exercises. Graduating with a 5-wk project of which I am proud! Walking away with some new friends and excitement to be a software engineer.

    Intensive, transformative, challenging, supportive, educational

It was an intense 12-week journey, learning both front-end and back-end technologies. As the only deaf student in the class, I faced challenges like the language barrier. I am extremely grateful for the patience, encouragement, and support from my instructors, supportive cohort mates, and everyone who took the time to communicate with me and help me make decisions throughout the project. Seeing the website I built and the code I wrote after just 12 weeks, I can hardly believe the progres...

    Learned a lot

The curriculum was comprehensive, relevant, and aligned with industry standards. The instructors were highly knowledgeable and employed effective teaching methods, creating an engaging learning environment. The bootcamp provided ample resources and support, and the job placement assistance program was robust.

HackBright is life changing for me.

I had to discontinue my first sponsored cohort due to personal reasons. But HB did not give up on me the second time I applied. The trust they had on me enabled to successfully finish my cohort. Proud to have learnt from the best people.

    Intense, fun, informative.

Hackbright is like thesis week in college, but for three months. It is an intense learning environment that does not allow for too much else to be going on in your life, but if you have the capacity, ability, and support around you to make that work -- I'd recommend you make that leap! It will push you to the limits of what you thought was possible, and you will come out on the other side as a strong job candidate that can tackle any twist and turn your career will throw at you.

    Great, Recommended

I really recommend Hackbright for anyone looking to learn more about coding and Software Engineering. I learned a lot and feel like it was a great experience, in a really welcoming environment. Hackbright Alumni are also the nicest community. However, this doesn't mean you get a guaranteed job. You need to network, and put in the work to get the best out. But if you are willing to do that, then I would definitely go for it!

    Read the Student Agreement

I spent months researching coding schools, considering technology stacks, program length, graduation rates, average salary of grads, etc. There were a couple of schools on my short list, but I decided to go with HackBright mainly because it promotes women in engineering and I was looking for the support the school offered. I applied and paid for the software engineering prep program, and was all set to start. The last step was to sign the Student Agreement. It was all pretty routine stuf...

    Best school ever.

I have really good experience with Hackbright. The best part was the instructors and lectures.
The instructors support students incredibly and their lecture is really good quality.
The school always makes sure everyone is on the same boat.
Also Hackbright's career team is really strong.

    Excellent choice for self-motivated individuals

My review will be somewhat unique for a couple of reasons:
    1. I took the part-time course on a full-time basis (i.e. I didn't have a concurrent job similar to most of my cohort-mates in the part-time program).
    2. I enrolled in a coding interview preparation bootcamp immediately after Hackbright where I learned data structures and algorithms.

If you can afford to take the part-time program on a full-time basis, I highly recommend it.  There is a lot of material/ topics to cov...

    Find Another Bootcamp

Pros - If you don't know anything and don't mind not learning much for your 1k+/week program, Hackbright is the place for you.
Cons- It will be very difficult for you to find a job. Outcomes will tell you your resume looks great, keep grinding and to "be prepared for a paycut" - Staff are almost all recent HB grads, not teachers or experienced SWEs. This means they are still learning and are often unable to answer questions ou...

    Do not recommend

I've just finished Hackbright and am disappointed. They have not transitioned well from in person to online and I think the quality has gone done considerably since they were bought by Capella education in 2016 (Capella was then bought by SEI in 2018 which may also be a factor). Personally, I regret coming to HB and wish I had chosen a different bootcamp (or just self-studied) but also acknowledge they are definitely not the worst out there. Several of us did express dissatisfaction with...

    Part-Time Fellowship Program

What I enjoyed about Hackbright Academy was the support system they have. Everyone is very supportive and helpful. Learning to become a software engineer is frightening, but Hackbright helps you to believe you can do it.

What I found challenging about the part-time class was studying after work.  I would study on my bed, but would end up falling asleep. I got myself a desk and monitor, this helped me put in more study hours and kept me from ...
