    Best Decision I've Made

I had a great experience with this boot camp. It was a grueling 6 months, but what I learned was worth every minute. The content was taught effectively and meticulously. Given this program is relatively new, there were of course a few aspects that could have been more organized.

The course requires two sets of homework, coding and career. While the coding homework was incredibly beneficial and absolutely crucial in the development of truly grasping the concepts, the career assign...

    NW Bootcamp – Amazing people!

Participating in the Northwestern Bootcamp took my development skills to a new level. The curriculum is solid and covers a broad array of information. The real value of the program is the team environment. The student success manager and instructional team were incredible and made sure the class was professional / well run. They created a collegial atmosphere that made the experience truly enjoyable. For me, the connections I made with my cohort classmates are as valuable as the dev skills...

    NW Bootcamp - Great Opportunity

First thing I want to say that what I am today is because of this "Bootcamp". I wanted to join this course to learn advance coding as I already had some experience in coding. I had no idea how this course would help me. I enrolled based on the topics they listed they are going to teach.
When I went for my first class I saw the students are totally from different backgrounds and different experience levels. It was kind of intimidating for me as many students know a lot more than me but...

    Hi PSewak,

We really appreciate you taking the time to leave us your review. We're glad that you enjoyed our course curriculum and structure, as well as the inclusion of group projects. We believe it is important for our students to gain experience working with a team just as they will in the real-world as professional web developers.

As you mention, this course does require students to dedicate a significant amount of their time outside of class to studying and practicing their skills. We commend you for all of the hard work you put into this program as we know it can be challenging to learn so many new concepts and skills in only 24 weeks.

We love hearing that our team, as a whole, provided you with the guidance and support that you needed to be successful in this program. Congratulations on completing the course, we're cheering you on as you move forward in your career!

Before I enrolled in this class I read a bunch of bootcamp reviews and looked into many programs. I rarely read reviews about anything because their inherent subjectivity, but this was a big investment for me so I thought I'd check around. I was surprised how dramatically diverse the opinions were from person to person, even those who were in the same program.

    Dysfunctional Bootcamp

This boot camp has been a truly horrendous experience.  To begin with, Northwestern has absolutely nothing to do with this boot camp besides lending their name and classroom space.  The entire program is run by a company called Trilogy Education Services.  Our current classroom learning has been so underwhelming (please read other listed reviews) that Trilogy sent the regional vice president into our classroom for an audit.  That should tell you right there how bad of an experience it has ...

    Hi Brett,

We are sorry to hear that you did not have a positive experience with our program. Your feedback is very important to us as it helps us to improve the student experience. Our academic team, as well as our executive team regularly audit our classes and seek feedback from our students, in person and through weekly surveys.

As you mention, Northwestern University has partnered with Trilogy Education Services, a continuing education program manager that provides proven, innovative, and university-approved curricula that are in use across 27 top universities in North America. This partnership allows our students to learn about the latest technologies in an environment that fosters lifelong learning through a constantly evolving curriculum that is informed by employers in our network from across the country, and carefully reviewed by the university.

As students can provide varying feedback, the support we offer our students is customized to their individual needs and will vary from person to person.  This is done to ensure that each of our students receives the support they need, whether that be tutoring, project support, or additional content reviews with our instructional team. A great experience!

I loved it! I really needed the guidance of a bootcamp program to develop my coding skills, and I got that here. I'm not sure that the class content goes far beyond what one could get at an online course or tutorial, but the way it was provided and the supportive staff were incredibly helpful. Great Opportunity!!!!

The reason I chose the bootcamp at Northwestern University over any other bootcamp was that the part-time schedule meant that I could still keep my full-time job and the other reason was that the professors teaching the course are full-time professionals. I highly recommend taking going through the Northwestern bootcamp. Amazing people

Going into this program, I didn't know what to expect. I had some programming experience before, but it was in an academic setting so I didn't have a reference point for a professional development program. What I ended up experiencing in this program was a model that worked. The curriculum was reverse-engineered from what employers expected their web developers to know. The approach to learning was hands-on and project-based.

    Data Science Boot Camp

The skills this program gave me were exactly what the market is looking for.  Before I graduated I had 3 offers as a data analyst.

That said you really need ot invest ALOT of time if you do this bootcamp out of class, be prepared for many late nights and having no social life during the course.

The program does cover data science but does not go into great detail, the majority of it is learning how to code and then the last few weeks cover machine learning.

    Would NOT recommend

I found my Bootcamp experience to be highly undesirable. If you have technical knowledge of any sort in the realm of computer science/web development then this course is definitely not worth the money.

The program focuses only on front-end development and briefly touches back-end technologies but nothing close to providing enough information to work in a professional setting. You will learn the very basics of storing data, little to no python and just enough to connect your front...

Thank you for your review. We regret to hear you were unsatisfied with your student experience. It's our mission to help as many hard-working, aspiring web developers as we can, so our program is designed for individuals with varying levels of proficiency — ranging from beginners to more experienced professionals, like yourself.

We understand you would have liked to spend more time focusing on Python, React, Vue.js, Angular, and additional back-end technologies. Our curriculum overview does indicate that Python is briefly covered, as part of our regional content. Additionally, the course focuses on the MERN stack: an open-source JavaScript web app stack, standing for MongoDB, Express, React, and Node.js. Half of the program is devoted to exploring these four popular back-end frameworks. Consequently, we are unable to delve into Angular or Vue.js.

Our course material is based on extensive market research, teaching in-demand skills that students can use to enter the current tech field, and we are proud of our ability to frequently make necessary optimizations. Northwestern is deeply involved in the curriculum and outcomes for all of their programs, continually monitoring classroom performance to ensure student success. We appreciate your feedback as we are constantly working on improving our curriculum to ensure participants are learning the most valuable skills and concepts.

As this is a boot camp, we do our best to communicate to students that because we cover a full-stack, topics are introduced at a high-level in-class. We pride ourselves on teaching individuals how to learn, providing a strong foundation of skills that will allow them to easily dive into other programming languages, even after the course ends. This helps participants learn how to problem-solve and self-teach; crucial abilities needed in any real-world role.

Like you mentioned, we encourage individuals who are dedicated and successfully complete the program themselves to apply for a TA position. These alumni are able to assist and guide other learners, as they have first-hand experience with the boot camp journey. We sincerely care about our students and always want them to feel supported, and as such, take input like yours seriously.

Our career services team is built on the principle of empowerment. This experience is focused on helping students become Employer Competitive and includes six pillars of support. Previous participants with significant background experience have found 1:1 coaching with their Career Director (a service that begins right before course completion) to be helpful. Did you find this to be beneficial? Although we're glad to hear you enjoyed the practice technical interviews, it seems you did not have an opportunity to participate in the entire career services experience. We're frequently enhancing our professional development assistance to ensure students have access to all our available offerings, so your feedback is valuable to us.

Your experience does not end upon completing the program, and we look forward to providing continued career support during the initial stages of your job pursuit. We would love to speak to you personally to see if there is anything else we can do to reinforce your knowledge or employment search. If you would like, please reach out to us at (312) 416-9979.

    Northwestern in name only

Agree with many of the other commenters on here - this thing is Northwestern in name only and run by a company called Trilogy Education Services.  Trilogy is all over the place with quality - our cohorts instructor seemed like they had just graduated from a bootcamp themselves and were not prepared to teach.  At the same time, another cohort had a great instructor but I wasn't able to switch to it.

Hi Anonymous, thank you for taking the time to share your review. Like you mentioned, the Northwestern School of Professional Studies has partnered with Trilogy Education Services (TES) to develop the Northwestern Coding Boot Camp. TES is the leading workforce accelerator in the United States and is partnered with more than 35 leading universities to expand access to coding education for working adults in the local community. Northwestern is deeply involved in the curriculum, instructor selection, and outcomes for all of their programs. Both Northwestern and TES are fully transparent about this partnership through their websites, marketing materials, admissions process, enrollment materials, and throughout the entire course experience. Our main priority is and will continue to be to enable student success, and as such we meet every week to monitor classroom performance.

We regret your instructional experience did not meet your expectations. We have an intensive vetting process, requiring a minimum of three years' experience as an active practitioner in the tech industry and hire professionals in lieu of traditional professors to best simulate real-life working environments. Northwestern vets every instructor that teaches in our boot camp programs, with fewer than 2.5% of all screened candidates selected. Before introducing themselves in the classroom, every instructor receives training and is continually evaluated based on video audits of their teaching and classroom assessments. Additionally, we request students to submit feedback on instructor clarity, engagement, and knowledgeability in order to ensure all individuals are receiving the best experience possible. We value our instructor's skills and efforts toward keeping our curriculum in-line with the latest market demands, however, we understand not all teaching styles will resonate with every individual student.

We're continually impressed by our students and what they're able to achieve. In the past year, graduates of our boot camp have been hired by companies in Chicago like IBM, Accenture, Expedia, PricewaterhouseCoopers, Bing, Hertz, American Eagle, HomeChef, Sprout Social, and many more. Our services are constantly evolving based on participant input, though, so we appreciate you sharing your insight.

It's our goal for all individuals to leave the program feeling prepared for and confident about the job search, so we would welcome the opportunity to speak with you to further address your concerns and provide any additional career planning assistance you may need at this time. Please contact us directly at (312) 416-9979. Thank you for your review and we wish you all the best!
